BarterTown.
Time passed as Johanna had a vision of a new city. She gathered
people from roving bands and nomadic pseudo-tribes and lead them deep
into the Wasteland. Her goal was to find a land far from nuclear pollution and chaos.
Just as Moses lead the Jews from bondage in Egypt over 3,000 years ago,
Johanna was now the seen as the chosen one. Her followers were drawn by
her personal strength and their fears were soothed by her articulate rhetoric.
Her promise was simple. Her goal was to lead survivors to the unspoiled
center of the continent. To escape the hard acid rains, the fall-out and
the nuclear winters, the surviving population learned to live underground.
Johanna knew of an elaborate mining operation from her frequent roaming
travels as marauder.
Upon arriving near the area of the soon-to-be-known-as "Gulag" Point, her fugitive fleet found their target. 500 Kilometers from Sydney, they found a century-old silver mine which had sustained the Australian economy until 1982. The mine had been abandoned for over a decade due to eradication of the silver. No silver meant digging stopped. The mineshafts were abandoned. Johanna saw this as a perfect place for protection from hard rain, nuclear radiation, and temperature extremes.
Johanna’s foundation to build a viable city meant the production of energy.
Thurston Howard, a "little person", was a university professor before
the Old World ended. As the cities crumbled many people were battered and smashed. Thurston spent years hiding and scavenging. He had suffered much at the hands of bandits. His path crossed Danger Johanna’s just as droves were leaving the major cities. She saved him from a looter's arrow. She often turned to him to solve complex problems. Though small in stature Thurston’s intellect towered over most men.
Johanna challenged him to find energy in a wasted land. Thurston found the answer, a renewable energy resource that had been stepped over, literally. Methane was fuel, natural, exploitable and there was much to be had. Nomadic tribes, for food and clothing, collected hundreds of animals. These animals and specifically swine were perfect for producing methane. Now she had a renewable energy source. Her scheming mind knew "She who has the methane makes the rules".
Thurston, later to be known as "Master", designed piping to capture and
store the methane. His plan was elementary in design. Methane would be collected in storage tanks. Some tanks would be used to fuel a ‘50’s era Mack prime mover. The Mack was once a Terra-Train used to remove spoil from the mining operation. The engine was used to drive the axle, which turned the electric generator, thus powering the town. This underworld of power generating meant long harsh days of physical duty for Thurston. One pig wrangler soon became a valuable assistant to Thurston. Toby was a giant physically but had the mind of a child. He was the exact opposite of Thurston. Soon they were inseparable. Thurston’s brains and Toby’s body became one. Thus Master and Blaster untied. Thurston, now known as Master became to realize his worth. Knowledge is power, plus he now was backed by physical strength. He began to live by the Barbarian’s code.
As Thurston developed UnderWorld, Johanna rallied the troops into working units. Some teams built a palisade around the city perimeter. Others repaired run down shacks, while more began Johanna’s lair. The word soon spread the methane was for barter. Nomads, Ex-Marauders, cutthroats, and road pirates found few victims. Most survivors were able to fend for themselves or had nothing of value. Trade began to increase. These Wastelanders would bring items of value to barter
for the fuel, methane. Over time, thousands of wanders brought every imaginable item to this city for trade. Stockpiles led to elaborate structures built from pieces of crushed civilization. Years progressed and Johanna’s rule broadened. Soon she became known as the "Auntie”? AUNTY ENTITY. Methane provided hope for a New World and Aunty controlled it all.
Now she had to sedate chaos. Just as George Washington, Genghis Khan, or
Julius Caesar before her, she set forth edicts, rules, laws and commandments.
What was the first rule of her city? "Before two men get to fightin'?, it will start
here and finish here?" thusly, a dispute arena was needed.
Aunty knew of just the structure yet it was twenty miles away. A strange cult of
Aborigines had built a commune some 50 years before. Long in ruins, the only
suitable remaining structure was the domed main house. This dome was used in ritualistic ceremonies where tribesmen would suspend themselves from the dome’s interior by means of hooks inserted into the skin on their backs. The pain experienced was a show of devotion and strength. This legend inspired auntie and her schemes. Auntie commanded her Lieutenants to retrieve the structure and re-erect it in Bartertown. This was the place to feed men's savage appetite for destruction, handle personal disputes and maintain law and order.
Aunty quickly dubbed this house of pain, ThunderDome. The crowds loved the
spectacle and soon earned to chant the taunt..."Two men enter...one man
leaves...."
Auntie’s success was built on BarterTown’s methane. A fact not missed by Master. Soon his demands became great and too much for Auntie to bear. Master, by Blaster’s deeds, began to publicly challenge Auntie for BarterTown’s rule.
Auntie was skilled in political maneuvering, but Master held the key to the real power, methane. Auntie was quoted “I’ve survived nuclear devastation, navigated deserts, re-birthed civilization, and I’ll be d**ned if I’ll answer to a midget!”
Master responded by having Blaster cut-off the town’s power until Auntie complied with his whims. His favorite phrase was “Embargo on!” As Auntie
squirmed under the pressure, Master’s arrogance grew. Auntie’s solution was to find an assassin to kill Blaster and control would be regained. The subsequent death of Blaster lead to a fierce battle for the control over Master. This battle left UnderWorld devoid of a power source, because the Mack was removed. BarterTown returned to the burnt out shell of empty civilization. It had lost power, guards, methane production, buildings, and hope. BarterTown was a house built of “straw.” Without power it was nothing. The looting began again and men’s hope slipped away as Auntie lost control of her dream. And the downward spiral continued……..
